COLLEGE ART ASSOCIATION, PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FELLOWSHIPS FOR ARTISTS AND ART HISTORIANS

PROGRAM : College Art Association (CAA) initiated the Professional Development Fellowship Program in 1993 to help M.F.A., terminal M.A., and Ph.D. students bridge the gap between graduate study and professional careers. By offering our support at this critical juncture in scholars?and artists?careers, we hope to make timely degree completion more viable and employment opportunities more accessible. In turn, by nurturing outstanding scholars and artists at the beginning of their careers, we hope to strengthen and diversify the profession as a whole. Each fellow receives support over a period of two years.

Year One: Degree Completion
CAA grants $5,000 to each fellow for use during the final year of his/her MFA or Ph.D. program. CAA does not restrict the use of these funds, nor will CAA prohibit recipients from holding other scholarships, fellowships, or employment during the term of this grant.

Year Two: Professional Placement
CAA helps each fellow search for employment at a museum, art center, college, or university. Upon securing a position, CAA provides a $10,000 subsidy to the employer as part of the fellow's salary. Participating organizations must match this grant 2:1. In addition to administrative and/or teaching duties, all fellows' positions must include a curatorial or public service component. Salary or stipend, position description, and term of employment will vary and will be determined in consultation with individual fellows and their potential employees.

ELIGIBILTY : CAA encourages applications from all art history doctoral students from socially and economically diverse backgrounds who:
Will complete their MFA or Ph.D. degree in the calendar year in which they applied.
Have outstanding capabilities and experience, and demonstrate distinction in approach, technique, or perspective in their contribution to the discipline of art history
Demonstrate financial need
Have been underrepresented in their field due to race, religion, gender, age, national origin, sexual orientation, disability, or financial status
Are citizens or permanent residents of the United States
The Wyeth Endowment for American Art Fellowship is open to all Ph.D. candidates studying American artists who will complete their dissertations and receive their Ph.D. degrees in the calendar year in which they applied.

POLLOCK-KRASNER GRANT, POLLOCK-KRASNER FOUNDATION

PROGRAM : The Pollock-Krasner Foundation몊 dual criteria for grants are recognizable artistic merit and demonstrable financial need, whether professional, personal or both. The Foundation몊 mission is to aid, internationally, those individuals who have worked as professional artists over a significant period of time.

Application Guidelines
The Foundation welcomes, throughout the year, applications from visual artists who are painters, sculptors and artists who work on paper, including printmakers. There are no deadlines. The Foundation encourages applications from artists who have genuine financial needs that are not necessarily catastrophic. Grants are intended for a one-year period of time. The Foundation will consider need on the part of an applicant for all legitimate expenditures relating to his or her professional work and personal living, including medical expenses. The size and length of the grant is determined by the individual circumstances of the artist.

ELIGIBILTY : The Foundation does not accept applications from commercial artists, photographers, video artists, performance artists, filmmakers, crafts-makers or any artist whose work primarily falls into these categories. The Foundation does not make grants to students or fund academic study.
The Foundation does not make grants to pay for past debts, legal fees, the purchase of real estate, moves to other cities, or to pay for the costs of installations, commissions or projects ordered by others. With very few exceptions, the Foundation will not fund travel expenses.

HOW TO APPLY : Artists are required to submit a cover letter, an application, and slides of current work. All applications will be promptly acknowledged and considered. Please do not send application forms by fax or e-mail.
A crucial part of the application process is based on the Committee of Selection뭩 review of each artist뭩 slides. The Foundation urges artists to send the highest quality slides of their work. It is recommended that while representative examples of your work over a period of years may be included, your most recent creative effort should be emphasized.
Artists interested in obtaining application forms and information on the application procedure can download the forms from our Web site or must write, fax or e-mail their complete mailing address to the address below.

REAPPLICATION PROCEDURE : Applicants may reapply to the Foundation, whether recipients of grants or those who have been declined. All reapplicants must send slides of work not previously submitted. The procedure requires that grantees who reapply must wait 12 months from the end of their grant period. Reapplicants who were previously declined must wait at least 12 months from the date of their application letter to reapply. The 12-month waiting period may be waived for reapplicants applying under emergency circumstances.
Past recipients of our grants should understand that the Foundation does not wish to become an instrument of extended or permanent support for particular individuals. Recipients who reapply must have either circumstances so changed as to warrant further support or have a genuine emergency situation.

THE PAUL ROBESON FUND FOR INDEPENDENT MEDIA

PROGRAM : The Paul Robeson Fund for Independent Media is the only ongoing source of funding committed exclusively to the support of social issues media. The Fund supports media activism and grassroots organizing by funding the pre-production and distribution of social issue film and video projects, and the production and distribution of radio projects made by individual media producers, as well as local, state, national, or international organizations. The primary purpose of the Fund is to support independent media productions that are politically and artistically compelling, but can also be used for progressive activism and organizing. The Fund considers the distribution of a film, video, or radio production as important as the project itself. Individual media producers must have fiscal sponsorship via a tax-exempt, nonprofit organization. The maximum grant award is $20,000; most grants range from $5,000 to $15,000.

INDEPENDENT STUDY PROGRAM (ISP), THE WHITNEY MUSEUM OF AMERICAN ART

PROGRAM : The Independent Study Program (ISP) consists of four interrelated parts: Studio Program, Curatorial Program, Critical Studies Program, and Architecture and Urban Studies Program. The ISP provides a setting within which students pursuing art practice, curatorial work, art historical and architectural scholarship, and critical writing engage in ongoing discussions and debates that examine the historical, social, and intellectual conditions of artistic production. The program encourages the theoretical and critical study of the practices, institutions, and discourses that constitute the field of culture.

Each year twelve students are selected to participate in the Studio Program, four in the Curatorial Program, six in the Critical Studies Program, and five in the Architecture and Urban Studies Program. The ten students participating in the Curatorial and Critical Studies Programs each year are designated as Helena Rubinstein Fellows in recognition of the substantial support provided by the Helena Rubinstein Foundation. The program begins in early September and concludes at the end of the following May.

Many of the participants are enrolled at universities and art schools and receive academic credit for their participation, while others have recently completed their formal studies.

Architecture and Urban Studies Program in collaboration with the Cooper Union School of Architecture
Architecture and Urban Studies participants are engaged in the critical study of architecture, the city, and the public sphere. They pursue individual scholarly research or architecture and urban design projects, presenting their work at the end-of-year exhibition.

THE FRANKLIN FURNACE FUND FOR PERFORMANCE ART/THE FUTURE OF THE PRESENT

PROGRAM : THE FRANKLIN FURNACE FUND FOR PERFORMANCE ART 2004-05
Supported by Jerome Foundation and the New York State Council on the Arts, Franklin Furnace awards grants between $2,000 and $5,000 to performance artists, allowing them to produce major works anywhere in the State of New York. Artists from all areas of the world are invited to apply.

THE FUTURE OF THE PRESENT 2005
Franklin Furnace offers artists an honorarium (this year of $5,000) and a residency facilitated by Franklin Furnace, for a 2-4 month duration at a physical or online venue appropriate to your proposed work. For THE FUTURE OF THE PRESENT 2004, we plan to continue to expand the technology available to our artists through collaboration with Parsons School of Design, Digital Design Department and beyond. Artists from all areas of the world are invited to apply.

Franklin Furnace has no curator; each year a new panel of artists reviews all proposals. We believe that this peer panel system allows all kinds of artists from all over the world an equal shot at presenting their work. All applicants are automatically considered for both categories of awards. Every year the panel changes, as the definition of "emerging artist," the notion of "live art on the Internet," and the definition of "performance art" itself changes, so if at first you don't succeed, try again.

HOW TO APPLY :

To apply to THE FUTURE OF THE PRESENT series you may send a ?inch videotape, audio cassette, slides, photos, CD-ROMS, Jaz, Zip, floppy disks or URL (either MAC or PC format).

FORD FOUNDATION

PROGRAM : Most of the foundation뭩 grant funds are given to organizations. Although it also makes grants to individuals, they are few in number relative to demand and are limited to research, training and other activities related to its program interests. The foundation does not award undergraduate scholarships or make grants for purely personal needs. Support for graduate fellowships is generally provided through grants to universities and other organizations, which are responsible for the selection of recipients. Most foundation grants to individuals are awarded either through publicly announced competitions or on the basis of nominations from universities and other nonprofit institutions. In all cases, recipients are selected on the merits of their proposals and on their potential contribution to advancing the foundation뭩 program objectives. For more information see http://www.fordfound.org/about/guideline.cfm. The Foundation does give scholarships, but generally through other organizations. The Foundation sponsors three graduate diversity fellowship programs---predoctoral, dissertation, and postdoctoral---through the National Research Council.
