FORD FOUNDATION

PROGRAM : Most of the foundation뭩 grant funds are given to organizations. Although it also makes grants to individuals, they are few in number relative to demand and are limited to research, training and other activities related to its program interests. The foundation does not award undergraduate scholarships or make grants for purely personal needs. Support for graduate fellowships is generally provided through grants to universities and other organizations, which are responsible for the selection of recipients. Most foundation grants to individuals are awarded either through publicly announced competitions or on the basis of nominations from universities and other nonprofit institutions. In all cases, recipients are selected on the merits of their proposals and on their potential contribution to advancing the foundation뭩 program objectives. For more information see http://www.fordfound.org/about/guideline.cfm. The Foundation does give scholarships, but generally through other organizations. The Foundation sponsors three graduate diversity fellowship programs---predoctoral, dissertation, and postdoctoral---through the National Research Council.

THE FRANKLIN FURNACE FUND FOR PERFORMANCE ART/THE FUTURE OF THE PRESENT

PROGRAM : THE FRANKLIN FURNACE FUND FOR PERFORMANCE ART 2004-05
Supported by Jerome Foundation and the New York State Council on the Arts, Franklin Furnace awards grants between $2,000 and $5,000 to performance artists, allowing them to produce major works anywhere in the State of New York. Artists from all areas of the world are invited to apply.

THE FUTURE OF THE PRESENT 2005
Franklin Furnace offers artists an honorarium (this year of $5,000) and a residency facilitated by Franklin Furnace, for a 2-4 month duration at a physical or online venue appropriate to your proposed work. For THE FUTURE OF THE PRESENT 2004, we plan to continue to expand the technology available to our artists through collaboration with Parsons School of Design, Digital Design Department and beyond. Artists from all areas of the world are invited to apply.

Franklin Furnace has no curator; each year a new panel of artists reviews all proposals. We believe that this peer panel system allows all kinds of artists from all over the world an equal shot at presenting their work. All applicants are automatically considered for both categories of awards. Every year the panel changes, as the definition of "emerging artist," the notion of "live art on the Internet," and the definition of "performance art" itself changes, so if at first you don't succeed, try again.

HOW TO APPLY :

To apply to THE FUTURE OF THE PRESENT series you may send a ?inch videotape, audio cassette, slides, photos, CD-ROMS, Jaz, Zip, floppy disks or URL (either MAC or PC format).

INDEPENDENT STUDY PROGRAM (ISP), THE WHITNEY MUSEUM OF AMERICAN ART

PROGRAM : The Independent Study Program (ISP) consists of four interrelated parts: Studio Program, Curatorial Program, Critical Studies Program, and Architecture and Urban Studies Program. The ISP provides a setting within which students pursuing art practice, curatorial work, art historical and architectural scholarship, and critical writing engage in ongoing discussions and debates that examine the historical, social, and intellectual conditions of artistic production. The program encourages the theoretical and critical study of the practices, institutions, and discourses that constitute the field of culture.

Each year twelve students are selected to participate in the Studio Program, four in the Curatorial Program, six in the Critical Studies Program, and five in the Architecture and Urban Studies Program. The ten students participating in the Curatorial and Critical Studies Programs each year are designated as Helena Rubinstein Fellows in recognition of the substantial support provided by the Helena Rubinstein Foundation. The program begins in early September and concludes at the end of the following May.

Many of the participants are enrolled at universities and art schools and receive academic credit for their participation, while others have recently completed their formal studies.

Architecture and Urban Studies Program in collaboration with the Cooper Union School of Architecture
Architecture and Urban Studies participants are engaged in the critical study of architecture, the city, and the public sphere. They pursue individual scholarly research or architecture and urban design projects, presenting their work at the end-of-year exhibition.

THE JEROME FOUNDATION

PROGRAM : The Jerome Foundation operates a grant program for individual media artists who reside within the five boroughs of New York City. This program serves primarily film and video artists; however, it welcomes other forms such as film/video installation, on-line projects and interactive media. This program does not support commercial, industrial, or strictly educational work. Grant Types: General Operating Support, Special Projects, Commissioning, Individuals, Production, Travel and Study (Minnesota only). Limitations: No Capital Campaigns. Areas: Local, MN, NY, Minnesota and New York City (Five Boroughs). How to Apply: Proposal, See Web site. Average Grant: $13,000. Full-time students are not eligible to apply. This program awards production grants to emerging artists who make creative use of their respective media. The Foundation supports artists whose work shows promise of excellence. These artists will most often be in the early stages of their careers and will not have had the support needed to achieve major recognition for their work. However, it is important to note that this program is not designed for students or people with little to no background as principal creators in media arts. Factors used to assess whether or not an applicant is emerging include production record/history, exhibition record, awards, grants, peer recognition, career stage, and critical response to the work.

LEF FOUNDATION

PROGRAM : LEF is a private foundation that supports the creation and presentation of contemporary work in the fields of visual art, performing art, new media, literary art, architecture and design. LEF is committed to providing support for provocative and innovative projects. LEF seeks to identify and promote creative ventures and to sponsor work that challenges its audience with new ways of perceiving the world. LEF values the relationship between art and its context. LEF is particularly interested in projects that demonstrate an awareness of the relationship between the work and its site. It is also interested in projects representing a convergence of disciplines that are interdisciplinary, or collaborative in format. As a small, independent arts funder, LEF acts both responsively and proactively. Our strategy is to apply the Foundation's resources in as nimble and effective a manner as possible. To encourage an atmosphere of creative possibility, LEF often endorses projects at the early stage of their development. LEF seeks opportunities where its funding will impact the success of the proposed activity by providing seed money, working in collaboration or in partnership with other funding sources, or in an effort to leverage additional support. The arts are transformative and essential. Now more than ever, LEF Foundation feels it is necessary to safeguard the potential connections that a dynamic and diverse cultural life provides. LEF Foundation operates within two regional areas: California and New England. Each region has unique areas of interest and funding priorities. Please refer to the specific guidelines for the region from which you are applying. For projects in occurring outside of these two regions, please contact the main office in California. THE PAUL ROBESON FUND FOR INDEPENDENT MEDIA

PROGRAM : The Paul Robeson Fund for Independent Media is the only ongoing source of funding committed exclusively to the support of social issues media. The Fund supports media activism and grassroots organizing by funding the pre-production and distribution of social issue film and video projects, and the production and distribution of radio projects made by individual media producers, as well as local, state, national, or international organizations. The primary purpose of the Fund is to support independent media productions that are politically and artistically compelling, but can also be used for progressive activism and organizing. The Fund considers the distribution of a film, video, or radio production as important as the project itself. Individual media producers must have fiscal sponsorship via a tax-exempt, nonprofit organization. The maximum grant award is $20,000; most grants range from $5,000 to $15,000.

POLLOCK-KRASNER GRANT, POLLOCK-KRASNER FOUNDATION

PROGRAM : The Pollock-Krasner Foundation몊 dual criteria for grants are recognizable artistic merit and demonstrable financial need, whether professional, personal or both. The Foundation몊 mission is to aid, internationally, those individuals who have worked as professional artists over a significant period of time.

Application Guidelines
The Foundation welcomes, throughout the year, applications from visual artists who are painters, sculptors and artists who work on paper, including printmakers. There are no deadlines. The Foundation encourages applications from artists who have genuine financial needs that are not necessarily catastrophic. Grants are intended for a one-year period of time. The Foundation will consider need on the part of an applicant for all legitimate expenditures relating to his or her professional work and personal living, including medical expenses. The size and length of the grant is determined by the individual circumstances of the artist.

ELIGIBILTY : The Foundation does not accept applications from commercial artists, photographers, video artists, performance artists, filmmakers, crafts-makers or any artist whose work primarily falls into these categories. The Foundation does not make grants to students or fund academic study.
The Foundation does not make grants to pay for past debts, legal fees, the purchase of real estate, moves to other cities, or to pay for the costs of installations, commissions or projects ordered by others. With very few exceptions, the Foundation will not fund travel expenses.

HOW TO APPLY : Artists are required to submit a cover letter, an application, and slides of current work. All applications will be promptly acknowledged and considered. Please do not send application forms by fax or e-mail.
A crucial part of the application process is based on the Committee of Selection뭩 review of each artist뭩 slides. The Foundation urges artists to send the highest quality slides of their work. It is recommended that while representative examples of your work over a period of years may be included, your most recent creative effort should be emphasized.
Artists interested in obtaining application forms and information on the application procedure can download the forms from our Web site or must write, fax or e-mail their complete mailing address to the address below.

REAPPLICATION PROCEDURE : Applicants may reapply to the Foundation, whether recipients of grants or those who have been declined. All reapplicants must send slides of work not previously submitted. The procedure requires that grantees who reapply must wait 12 months from the end of their grant period. Reapplicants who were previously declined must wait at least 12 months from the date of their application letter to reapply. The 12-month waiting period may be waived for reapplicants applying under emergency circumstances.
Past recipients of our grants should understand that the Foundation does not wish to become an instrument of extended or permanent support for particular individuals. Recipients who reapply must have either circumstances so changed as to warrant further support or have a genuine emergency situation.
